No-Face (Kaonashi) | Spirited Away | Not Reserved

[ Player Name ] : Tater
[ Personal DW ] : [personal profile] monkeytater
[ Age ] : 18
[ Timezone ] : Central
[ Other Characters ] : None

[ Character's Name ] : No-Face (Kaonashi)
[ Character's Age ] : Unknown. Could argue that he's ageless, being a spirit. Maturity-wise, possibly 16-17? Depending on the situation, he could show some childish characteristics.
[ Series ] : Spirited Away
[ Canon Point ] : The end of the film, as far as No-Face's involvement goes. After being accepted into Zeniba's home, and agreeing to stay with her.

[ History ] :
Not very much is known prior to the earlier scenes in the movie, where No-Face makes his first appearance, standing silently on the bridge leading into the bath house. As Chihiro and Haku pass by, No-Face seems to notice Chihiro's presence, showing a faint fascination with this unknown stranger. Before Chihiro's arrival, it's fair to assume that No-Face spent his lonely existence haunting the outskirts of Yubaba's bath house.

When Chihiro actually meets No-Face, it is raining outside and the spirit is standing out in the wet weather. Taking pity on him, Chihiro leaves the door open to let No-Face in. This act of kindness is absolutely foreign to the lonely spirit, and is the start of an unhealthy attachment to her. In return for this kindness, No-Face tries to help Chihiro by giving her the bath token that she needs. When he sees that it made her happy, he later tries to give her a handful of tokens to see if it makes her even happier. Unfortunately, she does not accept this second gift and that visibly shakes No-Face.

Later on, No-Face observes the bath house staff's intense desire for gold and uses this to draw a small frog worker close enough to swallow him up whole. This is the beginning of No-Face's irrational behavior. With the added desire to fill whatever emptiness he feels, in addition to the absorption of the greedy nature that is present around him, No-Face grows into a gluttonous beast that throws around false gold in the hopes of earning affection and happiness. Not being content with the fake adoration given to him from the staff, and not feeling full even with the mass amounts of food, No-Face focuses his efforts on the one who showed him genuine kindness in the beginning; Chihiro.

When he finally sees her again, he tries to shower her in gold, which she turns down. At this point he is blinded by greed and the certainty that he can buy happiness with material objects. No-Face unwisely tries to engulf Chihiro, perhaps as a means of absorbing a part of her kindness into himself. Luckily, Chihiro selflessly gives No-Face the medicine she meant to give to her parents, which causes the spirit to vomit uncontrollably and purge his body of the toxins that had turned him into a monster. Unfortunately, this is not an immediate process and No-Face responds to the medication with monstrous hostility, chasing Chihiro throughout the bath house, all while expelling a noxious mixture of hate and greed and gradually becoming weaker and weaker.

Eventually, as they reach the outside of the bath house, No-Face cleanses himself of everything he had engulfed in the first place. Still, he follows Chihiro, though he's no longer a monster and has returned to his original and true form. Now he is more akin to a lost child with nowhere else to go; Chihiro sees this in him, and allows No-Face to accompany her on her trip to Zeniba's home. When they finally arrive, No-Face seems to demonstrate an understanding of what makes a true friendship. He learns that kindness can be given without strings or objects, without hope of personal gain of any kind. He even finds that he has a talent of his own; spinning thread and knitting. He helps Chihiro out of kindness, and expects nothing in return. This is a turning point for the spirit, as he discovers that he can be happy by helping others merely for the sake of helping them, rather than looking for their explicit approval. When Chihiro leaves, No-Face chooses to remain behind and have a home with Zeniba.

[ Personality ] :
First and foremost, No-Face can be seen as acting like a bit of a child in the sense that he will try to mimic the attributes of those he cares about in order to gain acceptance. A shy and lonely spirit at his very core, No-Face seems to be more of a shadow for the people around him than a truly physical presence. It is safe to infer that he has been overlooked and unnoticed for the majority of his existence, which explains why he was so susceptible to attaching himself to Chihiro, the first person to really notice him. Very impressionable, he is likely to latch onto the first show of kindness that he sees in a person.

This trait isn't as abundant later in the story, as No-Face appears to mature in the same way that Chihiro does. His speech consists mostly of soft sighs and "Ah"s until he absorbs anyone, in which case he will assume physical and personality traits of this person and completely mimic their voice. That's not to say he's dumb, or incapable of communicating, as he is intelligent enough to understand speech and even pick up on the needs of others. He is empathetic to Chihiro's needs, understanding that by giving her the bath token she requires, she will be happy, and so he is capable of understanding others.

As polite as he may be, he's just as easy to corrupt; all it takes is the presence of people who possess these less desirable characteristics before he slowly begins to mirror them. At his core, he is not confrontational, and will only be such if he's tainted by the surrounding hostilities of present company, as seen when he is in the bath house and demanding Chihiro, demanding she take what he offer, and chasing after her to consume her. His hobbies include knitting, and he has turned out to be rather proficient in the art of spinning small amounts of thread and yarn into quaint trinkets. By the end of the story, No-Face has gotten rid of his habit of developing unhealthy attachments; however, that's not to say there's absolutely no way of such behavior resurfacing.

[ Strengths/Weaknesses ] :
As mentioned before, No-Face is quite a skilled knitter/thread spinner. Now, he won't be crafting anything as intricate as a wedding gown or ship sail, but he can knit together a number of basic pleasantries.

Being a spirit, and not necessarily in possession of a stomach and digestive system akin to what humans possess, No-Face can and might eat anything not bolted to the ground. This is mostly limited to organic objects, so you won't have to worry about him swallowing up the kitchen table. If he does, for whatever reason, engulf prey, he will assume physical characteristics of said object. On top of that, if this prey were capable of speech, he will take their voice as his own; this being the only way he is able to speak.

Another minor skill of his is the ability to materialize fake gold and likely other minor things that people place great value in from his body. Under the limitations of these surroundings, it's likely that this "gold" will only appear as such for a few minutes and change back into dirt or grime fairly quickly.

One last thing to note, is that he can fade in and out of visibility occasionally. I'm not certain if it can be considered teleportation, but all the same he'll likely be limited to temporary invisibility that will put more strain on him the longer he spends in this state.

As far as weaknesses go, No-Face seems pretty susceptible to having his feelings hurt from rejection and general negative feelings. He's very easily manipulated as he either puts all of his trust into you or he doesn't. A simple act of kindness will get him to do his best to make you happy, and this knowledge could be abused by someone with less well-meaning intentions.

And finally, he's not a very solid spirit so one could assume that he would not have very much power behind his punches. He's actually quite flimsy, so a good punch would be like assaulting a floating bed sheet.

[ Other Important Facts ] :
Not sure how important it is, but it would be worth noting that his mouth is actually not the mouth of his mask but rather a much larger one located closer to his middle, below the mask. There is no physical evidence of this mouth...until he opens it to eat. Also, he does not really have a body shape. He's more of a black robe without real definition, though he does have legs and arms that occasionally can be seen outside of his robe-like body.

[ Sample ] :
"....Ah....?"

Well, this is definitely unexpected. No-Face softly stumbles forward, as his feet quickly adjust to the sudden change in surface. The drops of water clinging to his mask hardly register to the spirit as he stares around curiously. He nearly drops the basket of vegetables that Zeniba had sent him out to fetch but, like a good assistant, his hands remain wrapped firmly around the container.

"...Ah......Euh..." is all that can escape his mask, though by the tone of his soft whispers, it sounds as if he's on the verge of tears... If he could produce any, that is.

Could this be a trick, cast on him by Yubaba? Perhaps she has come to seek compensation for the damages caused to her business. If that is the case, then where is everyone? This looks nothing like the places he is familiar with.

He sets the basket down, deciding that perhaps he should focus on leaving first. It should be simple enough. As powerful as that witch may be, No-Face is stronger than most give him credit for. He's just going to fade out and before you know it, he'll be right back where he was. The spirit feels his body drift away, blending out of visibility.

Something is wrong, though. No-Face lets out a light gasp, as the entire world seems to press down on him. It's as if a massive hand is grasping his entire being, slowly squeezing harder as the spirit does his best to remain out of sight. He only takes a few steps forward before quickly coalescing back into a physical form. A shiver works its way up his body, and a light whimper echoes out from the mask. This... This is not good. No-Face reaches down to pick the basket back up, and cautiously begins to walk. Perhaps he can find someone who could help him.
